The Lotus Academy is more than just a school. Yes, we provide students with a high-quality, well-rounded education appropriate for their grade level. Yes, our curriculum meets or exceeds that being offered in other elementary and middle schools statewide. Just like students in public and private schools across the state, our students learn and build proficiency in math, science, reading, writing, grammar, social studies, geography, technology, and the arts. But unlike students in other schools, our students become fluent in both English and either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.
The Lotus Academy's mission is simple: provide a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment, while providing fluency in a foreign language. From pre-kindergarten (3K) through second grade our students receive roughly half of their daily instruction given in English, and the other half in their chosen foreign language; either Spanish or Mandarin. From third grade forward, our students spend 60-70% of their day speaking and receiving instruction in their chosen foreign language.
Because our students receive a bi-lingual education, we have two types of teachers at the Lotus Academy. Our English-speaking teachers are state certified specialists in their chosen grade level(s), and our foreign language teachers are also certified instructors, some in the US, and others at universities abroad. Through Kindergarten there are two teachers per classroom: one to teach in English and the other to give instruction in either Spanish or Mandarin. Because of this, our student/teacher ratio is lower than most other schools at roughly 12:1.
How Language Immersion Works
There is no longer any debate: language immersion works, and the younger the student begins in such a program, the better. Research suggests that most of our language learning should occur between 2 and 10 years of age , and takes approximately 3 years of immersive instruction for spoken fluency; a bit longer for written fluency. For the vast majority of students, waiting until high school for their first exposure to a foreign language is too late, and fluency is therefore rarely achieved in this way.
The sole purpose of our school is to create the best possible environment for learning, comprised of the best teachers, the most proven and successful curriculum, technology-rich classrooms and learning tools, a high focus on security and safety, and last but not least, a focus on physical fitness and teaching a healthy lifestyle. Some of our school administrators and teachers will have their own children attending The Lotus Academy alongside yours, so you will always know that our interests are your interests.
